Air Flow Measurement and Air Mass Flow Meters: Optimizing Combustion Air Ratios for Boilers

Why Volume Based Air Flow Measurement Falls Short

Combustion air changes density with pressure and temperature. A volume reading in m3/h does not tell you the actual oxygen mass available for the burner. A hot day in Southeast Asia or a cold morning in the highlands changes mass flow even when the volume signal stays flat.


Boiler operators often see this as a drift in stack oxygen. The O2 trim loop may chase the wrong value. The fix is direct air mass flow measurement at the forced draft fan discharge or the windbox inlet.

Where to Install the Air Flow Meter

The best location is downstream of the forced draft fan and before the burner windbox. Allow straight run distance if possible. Ten duct diameters upstream and five downstream usually gives a stable profile. If the straight run is short, an insertion meter with multiple sensing points reduces swirl error.


Do not install the meter right after a bend or damper. The flow profile is unstable there. In practice, a meter installed two diameters after an elbow can jump by 12 percent. We have seen this on customer sites many times.

Yes. Many customers replace DP flow meters because thermal mass flow meters have no impulse lines to block and no separate temperature and pressure compensation. The thermal meter gives a direct mass flow signal in kg/h.
