Why Flanged Connections Matter on Permanent Loops

Threaded connections are fine for small air lines. Flanged connections are different. A paint manufacturer in Vietnam learned this last year after swapping to DN50 electromagnetic meters on a solvent recovery loop. The flanged body allowed the maintenance team to drop the meter out in 40 minutes. No pipe cutting. No production stop beyond the scheduled window.

Because the flange face carries the alignment, the meter fits back in the same position after service. Most engineers skip this part at first. They focus on accuracy and forget that the meter will be serviced at 2 a.m. with limited staff. Flanged connections reduce that service risk. Meter Selection for Flanged Inline Fluid Loops

We do not recommend one meter type for every loop. The right selection depends on conductivity, flow range, pressure, temperature, and what the plant needs to measure.

Electromagnetic flow meters: Use for water, wastewater, acids, slurries, and any liquid above 5 µS/cm. These meters cover DN10 to DN300 with PTFE or PFA liner, 316L electrodes, and 4-20 mA HART. Flange ratings include PN16, PN40, ANSI 150, and ANSI 300.

Coriolis mass flow meters: Use for mass flow in kg/h, density, and batch control. Common sizes range from DN15 to DN80. Coriolis meters handle viscosity changes and do not need long straight upstream pipe. We have supplied Coriolis meters for chemical plants in Mexico that dose solvents from 20 cP to 200 cP.

Vortex flow meters: Use for saturated steam, hot water, and compressed air. Sizes from DN15 to DN300. A vortex meter needs a straight run of 15D upstream and 5D downstream. We can supply calibrated pipe sections to match.

We supply these spools as separate items or preassembled with the meter.

For a DN100 electromagnetic meter on a chilled water loop, we normally add a 500 mm upstream spool and a 250 mm downstream spool. That gives 5D and 2D straight lengths. For a DN80 vortex meter on a saturated steam line, we supply a 1200 mm upstream spool. That gives 15D. Each spool can include a PT100 RTD thermowell and a 4-20 mA pressure transmitter tap. The whole assembly ships with a calibration certificate and paint marking for flow direction.
